A few words about Case Niinistö Sauli Niinistö, the ex-chairman of National Coalition, Finland's main opposition party, former long-time minister of finance and vice-chairman of the Board of Directors at the European Investment Bank, ran for the Finnish presidency in 2006. His election campaign designed by Bob Helsinki blew fresh air into the musty conventional opinions of the political left and right. In Finnish politics, National Coalition has traditionally been regarded as the party for the well-to-do that does not further the cause of the families living in "concrete suburbs". We challenged the sitting president Tarja Halonen in her own field: we told people on prime-time TV that strong national finances are the poor man's best safety net. The campaign was commended across party lines, allowing Mr Niinistö to put up a strong fight against the sitting president while at the same time taking up important new topics. |
