Malcolm Gladwell: Välähdys (Blink) - The Power of Thinking Without Thinking

In 1983 the distinguished J. Paul Getty Museum was offered a marble statue dating from the sixth century BC. The statue was a nearly perfectly preserved kouros, and the asking price was a little under ten million dollars. The art world was enraptured and the museum's test laboratory also gave its approval. Exhaustive tests showed the statue to the genuine.

Even so, the art historian Federico Zeri claimed on the basis of one glance that there was something absolutely false about the statue. A genuine ancient statue could not resemble something that that had just been dipped in a velvet café latte. Finally it was revealed that using potato mould it was possible to age marble a few thousand years.

That glance is an example of how experts in their own field often have the ability to make the right decisions instinctively without even being aware of the reasons for their conclusions. They quickly filter out pointless information and reach the desired outcome fast without endless chains of reasoning.

Malcolm Gladwell, a writer with the New Yorker magazine, is the author of an earlier book The Tipping Point (2005). In 2005 Time magazine named him among the hundred most influential people.

Books sold only in Finland.
