What is a graduation cap? The headgear of a Finnish secondary school graduate is not just any old cap. It was originally made compulsory by the Russian Emperor in 1832 so that the political activities of students could be controlled better. It was not until the 1950s that the everyday use of this white, peaked velvet cap declined and it was worn only on festivities such as May Day, but it never lost its symbolic value. Radicals changed the lyre badge into a red cross, technical students tied knots on the tassles of their caps for new kisses and girlfriends. The cap jumped into a new millennium when Bob Helsinki and garment designer Paola Suhonen's sewing machine changed the beloved institution into a "pipo", a close-fitting woollen cap. The graduate pipo is designed not only for the academic elite, but to the students of their own life - people who are capable of independent thinking. |
